Wie Mark Shuttleworth heute auf seinem Blog bekannt gab, soll Gnome Global Menu in der Netbook Version von Ubuntu 10.10 Einzug erhalten.

Global Menu lagert die Menüleiste von Anwendungen in das obere Panel aus.

Ich finde das Menü allerdings nicht nur für Netbooks interessant. Auf meinem (Widescreen) Laptop habe ich es einige Zeit eingesetzt. Als störend empfand ich vor allem, dass nur GTK-Anwendungen laufen, und es für Pseudo-GTK-Anwendungen (wie Firefox oder OpenOffice), die keine GTK-Widgets für ihr Menü benutzen, nicht funktioniert.

Sollten die Bemühungen das Gnome Global Menu in die Netbook Edition sauber einzupflegen gelingen, dürfte dem Einsatz (auch auf anderen Geräten) nichts mehr im Wege stehen.

Installiert werden kann das Global Menu aus dem Entwickler-PPA (Achtung: Auch dies ist eine Fremdquelle).

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:globalmenu-team/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu

As Mark Shuttleworth announced on his Blog today, Gnome Global Menu shall be included in the Netbook version of Ubuntu 10.10.

Global Menu puts the application menu bar int the upper panel.

I think the menu is not only nice on Netbooks. On my (widescreen) laptop I used to use it some time ago. What bothered me was that it is only working for GTK applikations and Pseudo GTK applications (like Firefox or OpenOffice), which do not use GTK widgets to draw their menu are not working.

But if the efforts of implementing it in the Netbook Edition work out, the use of the Gnome Global Menu on other systems will not be stopped by this issues again.

To install the Global Menu, use the developer PPA. Caution: This is an external source as well.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:globalmenu-team/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu
